There are plenty of great things to say about the 2022 Nissan Frontier. It’s proving to be one awesome truck. However, before you make your final decision, the Nissan Frontier does have three drawbacks to consider.
Three potential reasons to avoid the 2022 Nissan Frontier
Just to catch you up to speed, the 2022 Nissan Frontier arrived with a redesign. The exterior and interior have been updated, and modern tech was added. These are the first significant changes that have been made to the Frontier in 17 years!
As a result, the price increased. You can get started in a new Frontier for $27,840. This price is the MSRP, and it doesn’t include dealership markups or destination fees. Also, the Frontier still remains competitive, especially against rivals like the Honda Ridgeline, which start at over $30,000.

1. The 2022 Frontier is thirsty
The 2022 Nissan Frontier isn’t the most fuel-efficient option. It gets an EPA-estimated 18 mpg in the city and up to 24 mpg on the highway. Adding four-wheel drive reduces these figures to 17 and 22.
Rivals like the Ford Ranger get an EPA-estimated 20 mpg in the city and up to 24 mpg on the highway with 4×4. So, it’s not far behind rivals, but it is behind them. But on a positive note, a more powerful engine is included. With the Frontier, you get a 3.8-liter V6 with 310 hp and 281 lb-ft of torque. The old four-cylinder engine is gone.
2. The Frontier is a little cramped
The teams at Cars.com noticed that the 2022 Frontier has a tight rear seat. The Frontier still maintains its old dimensions while rivals like the Jeep Gladiator offer massive backseats. Plus, the small doors can make it difficult to enter and exit the vehicle.
But the Frontier does offer ample storage. There’s a large tray in front of the shifter. The center console bin is large enough to store a few water bottles, and the door pockets are average. Also, the Nissan Frontier can only tow up to 6,720 lbs and carry a payload of up to 1,610 lbs. This is below average for the class.
If you want to tow 6,720 lbs, then you have to stick with the 2WD model. With 4×4, the Frontier can only tow up to 5,600 lbs. Also, you can opt for an available integrated brake controller later when it comes out.
3. The steering feels heavy
The 2022 Nissan Frontier features classic hydraulic power steering. To be fair, it provides a better feel than the electric system. However, turning the wheel requires more effort, and it feels pretty heavy.
If the Frontier wants to add features such as lane-centering assistance or semi-autonomous driving, then it will need to be updated with electric power steering.
Other than that, the Nissan Frontier has a smooth ride and quiet interior. It’s a nimble truck, and the Pro-4X adds off-roading goodies such as an electronic locking rear differential and extra skid plates. The new cabin has an attractive layout and style with more comfortable seats than before. It still deserves a chance if you’re considering buying a midsize truck.
